The winter months can get quite boring for children, so finding activities that are fun and frugal are key. This easy and inexpensive gumdrop village for kids is the perfect solution if you want an activity to help them beat the boredom blues. Using just $2 worth of dollar store materials, your kiddos can craft to their delight and create a fun and festive gumdrop village. Take a look below at how to get started and make your own!

Gumdrop Village

Supplies needed:
Gumdrops
Toothpicks
Decorative scrapbook paper

Directions:
1. You can begin creating your houses for your village by pressing toothpicks into gumdrops. Repeat this process until you have a dozen or so toothpicks with a gumdrop pressed into each end.
2. You can now start attaching these “logs” to each other by using additional toothpicks. Create a base, square shaped works best, and build your way up. Use the toothpicks to add layers to the house/cottage and support the structure. As you build, do so on your piece of scrap book paper. We chose a simple white so it would look like snow.
3. Tree can be made (as can street lamps) by simply sticking green or yellow gumdrops into the toothpicks and placing them around the house. You can also lay gumdrop pavers to create walkways! Some dollar stores carry various gummy animals and people, all of which can be added to make your gumdrop village even more fun and exciting.

For our sample village, we did a small house with trees and lights. We did a walkway in the front and even made a gate to greet visitors into the yard. It was quite fun, and looks great when left out as a holiday decoration. The best part? If it does not turn out the way your child wants, he can always eat it! Now that is festive AND functional!
