Tips for Keeping Up with New Year’s Resolutions

We all have good intentions going into the New Year, but sometimes we set unrealistic goals for ourselves that set us up for failure.   One of the very most important tips is to be REALISTIC in your goal setting.   There is no point in making a resolution that you cant keep right?  If you have tried a particular resolution in the past and were unable to keep it, don’t set the same goal again.  Shake it up a bit!  Start 2014 with a small attainable resolution.  Once you reach that goal you can bring it up a notch to the next level, starting out small helps you take steps towards your ultimate goal.

Another step that really helps is to TELL PEOPLE about your resolution.  Call it peer pressure if you want, but when you tell others about your goal, you are taking an active role in accomplishing what you set out to do.  It is pressure of course, but that is often a good thing in helping you push yourself to reach your goals!

New Years Goal Planning

Making a New Year’s Resolution will take some careful planning. In other words, do not just make up a New Year’s Resolution without thinking about what steps you’ll have to take to make sure you realize your goal.  Jot down a few steps that will have to be taken in order to reach your goal, whatever goal you decide to make. Think of it like trying to cook a family recipe..one of the steps would be buying the ingredients you’ll need.  It would be pretty hard to complete the recipe without taking the proper steps , right ?  And so goes your resolution

If you were trying to lose weight you might take theses steps, for example…

1. remove junk food from the house

2. buy walking shoes to exercise 30 minutes a day

3. buy fruits and veggies in snack size portions etc..
By outlining all the LITTLE steps you have to take   you are actually  better prepared to reach your ultimate goal.

It’s always a good idea to keep a running tally of your progress . Keep a progress chart, and be sure to pretty it up and make it FUN to use. It really gives you a feeling of satisfaction as you start checking off all those little steps we talked about, toward reaching your goal. A chart  can be a fantastic motivator so be sure that one of your steps toward reaching your goal is making that chart !

Remember friends, If you should happen to have a setback in which you slip back into your old habits or neglect your goal, do NOT  stress yourself out too much. Try to climb back on that horse and kick that Resolution back into gear ASAP.   Everyone  has a bad day , week, even month … but the only time we fail is when we give up . So DON’T give up and you will reach your goal in 2014 !
