LETTING GO OF THE NOISE IN YOUR LIFE

All day long we are surrounded by noise. Lots and lots of noise. Most of the time, we become so use to it that it plays out around us like background music, barely even noticeable after so long.

The cartoons and commercials are deafening, with high pitched shrills and squeals. Around us there are dogs barking, customers talking, phones ringing, computers beeping, and receipts printing. Our furnaces and air conditioners hum, our stairs creak, and the water drips. Noise is the constant backdrop of our lives, so it is no wonder that many times we feel that in order to be heard, we need to scream.

By then, it may seem like no one is listening. The noise makes us feel powerless, out of control of ourselves. The end result is typically never pretty. But take hope. There is a beautiful quote by Allison McGhee that goes like this: “You are most powerful when you are most silent. People never expect silence.”

So start thinking about letting go of the noise. Not just the physical noise that surrounds you, the cars, the kids, the creaking steps and ringing phones, but the constant fuzz and conversations that goes on in your head. The conversations about worry and wonder, confusion and doubt, that can keep you up into the late hours of the night. The ones that can keep you from being your best.

This may seem challenging at first. If only there was an off switch for all of it. But wait, there is! Create a sanctuary for yourselves. Your own noiseless space. Maybe it could be the shower,  where you enjoy the trickling of the water whirling at your feet, taking all of your worries and anxieties down the drain with it. Step out of your sanctuary, feel empowered. Maybe it is 15 minutes alone in your car, with the radio off and the breeze coming through the windows. Maybe it is your favorite chair in your living room, with the television off and the only sound being your breathing, slowly in and slowly out. Today is the day to find your noiseless space, to turn off the sounds, all of them. To be still. To let go of the noise. It may feel strange at first, as we are not typically use to silence. But try to embrace it and feel the heaviness, the business even, leave you. Fifteen minutes a day is an excellent goal to set for yourself. That 15 minutes of silence can make all of the difference in the world.

So be silent. Let go of the noise. Feel the calm, and the rest will follow. A better mood, a calmer state of mind, clearer thoughts, and your own self power will all find you. Because for once, there won’t be any noisy distractions blocking the path.
