It seems as though finding new uses for old items is all the rage these days!

Our grandparents called it “making do with what they had,” but we gave it a cool name that makes it sound new and trendy…”Repurposing.”

When you repurpose, you are taking an item and giving it a new and unexpected use and therefore, saving money, time, and the planet while you are it!

Each Friday I will highlight a new idea on our FIVE PART SERIES on repurposing.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I have while working on ideas!

Let’s dive right into some repurposing shall we?

stockpile

Like most couponers, you probably adore your stockpile!  And why shouldn’t you? You work hard cutting those coupons and chasing those sales in order to build your stockpiles up.  But what if your stockpile is taking over?  Do you build a shed out back?  Rent a storage unit?  No way!  These would all cost you money, defeating the purpose of your stockpile. Instead, take a look below at the ten ways to store your stockpile for less. You can use everyday items you already own to get a grip on your stockpile before it gets a grip on you.

Is your stockpile out of control? Take a look at how easy it is to store your items more efficiently! You might just be surprised at how easy it is!

10 Ways to Store Your Stockpile for Less:

1. Under the bed shoe organizers.

This would refer to those long and flat containers meant to hold your shoes, under your bed. These containers are nice because they are easily available and inexpensive. They are perfect for storing small boxed items such as oatmeal, cereals, Jello, and other small boxed snacks.

2. Decorative baskets.

Chances are you have tons of these, and if not, you can find them at local thrift stores for pennies. Take decorative baskets and use them to store your small items such as spices, mixes, small snacks, etc. They look much nicer and neater displayed on a counter or up on a shelf if you need to display them this way.

3. Upcycled dresser.

Do you have an old clothing dresser in your garage or spare room? Nothing hides a stockpile better than the drawers they have. You can even hide larger items since the drawers are wide and deep. Put an unused dresser in a spare room or closet and use the drawers to keep your stockpile safe.

4. Decorative hamper.

If you have a nice clothing hamper you are not using, use it to store your stockpile items. The decorative outside as well as the secure lid make it the perfect place for storing your items in site while keeping the actual products out of site.

5. Over the door shoe organizer.

These organizers are ideal for hanging on your pantry door. The small pockets make them perfect for storing toothpaste, toiletries, spice packets, and other small and slim stockpile items that you wish to keep neat and organized.

6. Ornament Storage totes/dividers.

Each holiday season, you will see those large plastic totes on sale that have the dividers in them for ornaments. These are perfect for keeping your stockpile organized and dry, perhaps in a garage or outdoor closet. The lid keeps pests out and the plastic keeps moisture away. Plus, the dividers make it easier to keep your items separated by variety.

7. Pillowcases.

Stuff items such as toiletries, toothpastes, deodorant, and body washes in pillowcases, and then hang the pillowcases on clip-on skirt hangers. You can then put the hangers in a closet, keeping your stockpile high and dry. How nifty!

8. Utilize decorative shelving.

Do you have knick knack shelves in your house? You can always hide small stockpile items (toothbrushes, mixes, medicines) in decorative tins and place them on your shelving. It will be visually appealing and only you will know what is in them.

9. Ice cream buckets.

Do you like to purchase ice cream in those large gallon buckets? Don’t pitch them when empty! They are perfect for holding candles, air fresheners, and other stockpile items such as those. Put the lid on and your product will remain nice and fresh. You can hang the handle from a hook in your closet for easy storage.

10. Barter with your spouse.

Does your hubby or wife have extra closet space? Does your favorite guy have a lovely two sided tool shelf unit and only uses half (haha)?  Offer to keep them fully stocked in their favorite snackies in exchange for storage space!  Chances are the idea of free snack cakes, ice cream and top quality razors will tempt them enough to give you a little room. It is worth a shot!

Don’t let your stockpile take over your home and life. The point of having one is to save time and money, not cause you stress and clutter. Instead, follow these tips and get your stockpile under control!   As soon as you do, you will realize you have space for more. Hip hip hooray!
