Can you believe it is time to start raking leaves already? They are twirling and swirling through the air all around us. And while you might just want to rake them to the curb for a swift disposal, don’t do so without saving a few first. Why? For this excellent Dollar Store DIY project of course! With just a few basic supplies found at your local dollar store and in your backyard, you can create this fun and festive painted leaf wreath. So get your front door wreath ready, and take a look below at how to make your own!
Frugal Fall Painted Wreath
Supplies Needed:
Foam wreath form
Black owl or crow
Assorted fresh leaves
Black spray paint
Hot glue gun, glue
I was able to find all of the above items at our local Dollar Tree with the exception of the spray paint and the leaves. I already had a cheap can of black spray paint at home ($1 at Walmart I believe) and plenty of leaves in my backyard.
Directions:
1. To begin, lay your leaves flat on a piece of old newspaper. Hold the spray paint can 6 inches away and start spraying until the leaves are coated. Allow a few minutes to dry and apply a second coat.
2. Once your leaves are dry, you want to start applying generous dabs of hot glue on the back of them. Press them firmly to the wreath form working your way in a counter clockwise direction. As you are gluing them on, you will want to have them overlap the leaf you glued down before them just slightly. This will keep your wreath looking full.
3. Continue this process until all of your leaves are glued on. You can then go in and glue additional leaves to cover any bare spots.
4. Take a small bird or owl and place it inside the wreath. You can either glue the feet in or use the wires in the feet to adhere it into the foam.
That’s all there is to it! You can now display your wreath on a mantle, shelf, or front door even. Add a piece of ribbon for hanging or you can twist a paper clip into a loop shape in the back. Either way, this frugal fall painted leaf wreath is sure to bring some spooky charm into your home this Halloween season. Plus, can you think of a better way to use that abundance of leaves in your yard? I don’t think so! Gather your supplies and give this fun DIY project a try!
