Wintry days are ahead, which means spending lots of time indoors. Pretty soon, you AND your kiddos might start going a little a little stir crazy. This season, why not try making your own snow sensory bin instead? It is a great way to bring the icy fun indoors while allowing your children to explore and utilize and strengthen their fine motor skills. You only need a few supplies, so take a look below and see how to create your own! In no time, your kids will think you are the coolest parent around!

DIY Children’s Snow Fun Sensory Bin

Supplies needed:

  • Large tub or mixing bowl (Check out your own pantry or dollar store!)
  • Assorted kitchen utensils such as a pasty brush, tongs, spoons, mixers
  • Assorted cookie cutters
  • Food coloring
  • Plastic toys such as dinosaurs or animals
  • Large tablecloth
  • Snow (You can use real snow from your own yard, pop a few ice cubes in a blender to make your own, or use packing peanuts or flour. You have quite a few options, so don’t let not having any real snow in your yard discourage you!)

Directions:
Creating your sensory bin is so simple. Simply place your snow (or snow substitute) in the bowl. Lay down a table cloth so you can enjoy easy clean up. Place the bowl and utensils on the cloth and let your child start exploring. They will love scooping and shaping the snow, pouring it into containers, coloring it with the food coloring, and getting their hands all up in it! Activities such as this encourage fine motor development as well as creative play.

See how simple it is to create a children’s sensory bin? This snow/winter themed bin is the perfect activity when your children shout, “I’m bored!” So gather your materials and give it a try. When you do, be sure to snap a picture and share it with us on our Facebook page or Community Chat page. We would love to see this activity in action!
