Many of us use long holiday weekends as a time to get our houses back in order (UGH, I know).  But you have to admit, it does feel good to get our homes all cleaned back up and organized.

Pretty much everyone I have talked to has either been in the process of cleaning their home / yard or plan to this weekend which got me thinking…

ITS TIME TO PURGE SOME OF THESE OLD COUPON INSERTS!!
(for those of you that have been getting numerous coupon inserts and filing by date)

How do you go about purging old coupons, you might ask? I have a really easy system that prevents me from throwing out old inserts that might still have valid, non-expired coupons in them. Here’s what I do:

I’ve mentioned the Coupon Mom coupon database in the past, when you click on the link HERE it will show you the FLORIDA COUPON DATABASE.  This is a list of all coupons that have been distributed in Florida.

When the coupon database opens, don’t search for anything in the search box. Simply scroll down to the very bottom (past the pictures) and you will see every available non-expired coupon listed in date order from newest to oldest.

Scroll down to the very bottom of the list, where the oldest possible coupons are.

If you look right now, you’ll notice that the oldest insert listed is 6-7-09 RP. So right away, you know that you can toss everything prior to that. And then you can look at the one single coupon that isin the 6-7-09 RP, and decide if that insert is worth keeping.

Just go up the list and keep doing that until you’ve purged your old coupon inserts, and you’re left with inserts that have valid coupons that aren’t expired yet!  If an insert has only a couple coupons you want, you might consider just clipping those few and tossing the remainder of the insert.

I pretty much purged everything up through September yesterday. You might want to look at the coupons that were in the 10/04 RP, 10/18 RP, 11/15 SS, 11/22 SS, 12/06 RP & 12/13 SS to see if there are any that you might want to keep.  In my opinion, the January 3rd RP has the best coupons, I ended up saving the following inserts that started after January:  1/3 RP1 (there were two), 1/24 SS, 1/31 SS, 2/7 RP, 2/7 SS, 2/14 RP, 2/21 RP, 2/21 SS, 2/28 SS, 3/7 RP, 3/7 SS and everything else up to date.  Remember, the P&G’s are only good for one month so there is no need to keep old one’s of those.  Also get rid of any old Publix coupon booklets while you are at it!!

ONCE I purged all of my old inserts (now remember, I get 10-20 per week), I put each week’s inserts in a large mailing envelope and wrote the date in the upper right hand corner of the envelope and stacked them nicely in my filing box.  This keeps everything looking nice and tidy and makes it very easy to go directly to that week’s insert when you need a coupon.  Thanks frugal fun fortune for the reminder!

I hope this information helps you if you are planning to organize this weekend.  Please comment me and let me know what you think!!
