Are you one of those people who are more comfortable when surrounded by noise? Many are, you are not alone. But did you know that sometimes, silence truly is golden? During the silent times in our lives, we are best able to reflect inward and listen to what it is our bodies and minds are telling us.
To today, let’s try for finding the beauty in and embracing silence.
As parents, when we no longer hear laughter or screaming coming from the kid’s playroom, we know to go in check on them. As anyone with children knows, silence is typically an indicator that someone is up to trouble. When we cook dinner we often keep the t.v. or music on as background noise. We very rarely think of driving a car without the radio on, and whether is it 100 degrees out or 2 degrees, you may sleep with the window open to hear crickets, the cars, and whatever else might be going on in the neighborhood.
And so I want you think about…how very uncomfortable are you with silence?
I want you to think about this scenario: You know when you are with someone who makes you so comfortable with yourself, that no words are necessary? There is no weird or awkward silence when no one is talking. There is just silence. No one has to talk, no one has to entertain, you can just sit and be you. Quietly. Silently. And it is all good. That’s it. You can pretty much hear each others thoughts, feel their contentment, and all seems right. Even if it just for a moment.
So it makes me wonder, if we can absorb that much from another person when we enjoy silence with them, how much can we absorb about ourselves when we sit in silence alone? Hey, it is worth a try. In fact, once you learn to embrace a little silence with yourself each day, you just might become addicted to it.
So enjoy the silence you are able to find today. Turn off the distractions and just sit. You will feel amazing, listening to absolutely nothing, yet hearing absolutely everything.
