We don’t seem to ponder on the word compassion very often. It seems as though the word has been lost lately, as we get busy with our lives and all of the hustle and bustle that goes with it. So what exactly does compassion mean? Compassion in a nutshell is defined as sympathy and concern for the hardships, sufferings or misfortunes of others. So now I ask you, are you a compassionate person? When was the last time you showed compassion to others? If you are struggling to think of an example, it may be time to practice compassion in your daily life. How you ask? Well there are plenty of simple ways! Take a look.
How to practice compassion this week:
1. Help an elderly neighbor.
Find an elderly neighbor and help them with a task such as yard work or housekeeping. Take them a flowering plant to enjoy or perhaps a plate of cookies. Offer to walk their pet, or just sit and chat for awhile. They are sure to enjoy being so cared for, and you will enjoy how great it makes you feel.
2. Volunteer at a local shelter.
Find a local homeless or women’s shelter to spend an hour or two at. You can serve a meal, teach a skill such as crafting or cooking, read to the children, or help with office work. The organization will love having the extra hand and help, and you will be doing a wonderful service to others.
3. Make army care packages.
Find the family of local service man or woman and see if you and some friends can gather care supplies for them. Box up the items and ship them off with your well wishes, warm thoughts, and prayers.
4. Donate to a local pet shelter.
Gather treats, blankets, and other pet products to donate to your local pet refuge. You can even donate an hour of your time cleaning cages, walking the pets, or helping to feed and play with them. The critters will love the extra attention and it will do you a world of good as well.
5. Wear another pair of shoes.
Not literally of course, but try to put yourself in another person’s shoes and circumstances each day. It can best help you understand where they are coming from and be less inclined to get frustrated with them.
When you practice compassion, you are making yourself a better person. You are practicing love, kindness, and sending some amazingly positive vibes out into the universe. Practice compassion this week, and see what a change it evokes in your life!
